Regional Geography

Review
1. Choose a region of Canada. (We have learned)
The Interior Plains

2. Find a picture you like of this region.
3. Tell me about this region's climate, vegetation, topography. Use 5-8 sentences.
climate:The climate of the Interior Plains is a continental climate. This means the temperature of this region is affected by this region's location in the heart or center of the continent.
vegetation: It is called Plains,so the land is lower. This help this area grows a lot of corps, also the natral things. It is covered with grass.

Topography:It is divided in 3 levels,each level is lower as you move to the east. Because it is in the middle of the continent, the air is drier. Some water ways running across the region, this make the land fertial.

4. Find a picture to show this region's climate. Be creative.
This land is grey, that means dry. But some water is running thru it,that shows the climate of the region.
5. Find a picture to show this region's vegetation. Be creative.
The weather is dry, but the vegetation are strong. The grey mountains shows that.
6. Find a picture to show this region's topography. Be creative.(If you need help, find the information in your textbook)
It has 3 levels, each level is lower as you move to the east.

Arctic Region

This is the last region we are going to learn about!


We are going to have a test on Friday on all the regions we have learned!What is the Arctic Region?


The Arctic Region in northern Canada is a combination of lowlands and mountains!


Questions (You have 7 questions in total!)

1. Find a map that shows you the Arctic Region in Canada. Explain what you see in 3-5 sentences.
This region includes the big area of ocean, Russia, Canada, little bit of USA. It is a big region.


2. Find a picture of the Arctic region you like or don't like. Explain what you see in 5 sentences!
Wildlife ha! How cute is this polarbear~~Though it is yellow(just dirty), it has a black nose(all the polarbear have black noses), it is sleeping like a little sheep. The snow is dirty, nearly melted. I bet this is because of the global warming...


3. The Arctic region's climate has long, cold winters and short, cool summers! There is very little precipitation in this region. What would your life be like if you lived here? Explain in 5-8 sentences.
That means whole year's temperature is lower than other places. The long cold winters are cruel, but I'd love to live in cool summers. This make my life healthier. Food won't turn bad that easily. But i need to put on fire most of the year. That cause a lot of trouble...


4. The Arctic region's vegetation include small shrubs, mosses and lichens.

It is a region usually located in higher places. The winter is long, summer is cool. There are lots of strong winds, whole day with sunlight or moonlight. The weather and the time is unusual.



7. Find a picture you like of the Arctic tundra. Post it! Explain what you like about it in 3-5 sentences.

This is amazing! In this picture, there are lots of small lakes on the ground. This makes this place wonderful, just like broken mirrows falling here. And this misty picture is a color of cool and peace.

Western Cordillera Part 2

Western Cordilleran vegetation varies enormously from one side of a mountain to another. Some sides of a mountain get a lot of water and some don't!It is called the rain-shadow effect!

Did you know?
On the most, windward slopes of the mountain. There are trees like the Douglas Fir, western hemlock, and western red cedar.

Yes. 2. How can you remember what this tree looks like and it's name?
It looks fat...Douglas Fir, it is hard to remember.
3. Find a picture of Western Hemlock. Have you seen this tree before?
4. When you look at a Western Hemlook, what is special about this tree. Tell me 3 things about this tree?

1.it usually grows 30 to 50 metres tall.

5. There are many mountains in this region. What do you think happens to the vegetation when we get higher up to the mountain? Can you guess?
Higher, colder. So the higher place has stronger evergreen trees. Like pine trees.

6. In the southern part of the Western Cordillera region, there is less rain. If there is less rain, do you think the great evergreen trees will grow?
Of course. These evergreen trees will get use of the climate.

7. The largest trees in the world exist in this region. They can be found in the United States because this region is very long and goes all the way down into Canada's neighbor!!! These trees are called "Giant Sequoias".

a. Find a picture of a Giant Sequoia you like. Explain why you like or don't like it in 3-5 sentences.
I like it. This is the tree in California, yes, the large region includes America and Canada. The color is bright and unusual, I never saw it before.

8. What did you learn today? Explain in 5-8 sentences. Be serious!!!!
I'm continue learning about this region. The nature is amazing! The trees are in different shape. On the mountains, evergreen trees are the winners. I like the tree called Giant Sequoias, it is huge. Most of the trees on the mountains are huge and tall, like Western Hemlock.

The tree is located in the Giant Forest of Sequoia National Park in the United States, east of Visalia, California.

General Sherman is the name of a Giant Sequoia with a height of 275 feet (83.8 metres).

The Canadian Shield



The next geographical region you will learn about is the Canadian Shield. This lesson should be finished in two computer classes.The Canadian Shield is more than 2 billion years old. It consists of great volcanic mountains that were leveled by millions of years of erosion. It is the geographic foundation of Canada covering more than half of its surface area.
1. Find a map of this region. Which provinces are in this region? (IF you don't know what your map is telling you, DO NOT WRITE I DONT KNOW! ASK me or a friend!)
Nunavut,Manitoba,Ontario,Quebec and a little Saskatchewan are in this region.

2. Translate What is erosion? Explain in your own words.The climate of this region varies greatly. There are colder winters in the north.

侵蚀
It means be eaten by something little by little,like rust.

3. Why do you think the climate of this region will vary? Explain in 3-5 sentences. Look at the map of this region and think about it.

Because this climate is quite near to the Bay,almost covers all the area sorround the Bay. The water makes the climate different. The region is giant, of course different places have different climate!

4. The vegetation of this region is mostly boreal forest. What is special about a boreal forest? Explainin 3-5 sentences.
寒带森林 It is the forest in the cold places. Such as Canadian Shield is in the north of Canada. This forest exist in the strict weather, so they are strong.
5. Find a picture of the Canadian Shield. Explain why you like this picture in 3-5 sentences.
This picture is quite funny--it is like a Platypus. The sands in the water come together and make up this little hill,a island. Some plants on the island are straight, I feel the nature is wonderful. (It is wired...)

6.There is a lot of mining in this area. The Canadian shield is sometimes called a "mineral storehouse" because it has a lot of valuable minerals like lead, copper, gold, zinc and nickel.

7. If you were the owner of a mining company, why would you want to come to this area? Tell me at least 2 reasons.

There are so many mines underground. Such as lead,copper,zinc~ So I can earn a lot of money.

(I am an owner of a Canadian mining company) This is the biggest mining area! And if i am a Canadian mining company, there's no reason to go to China for mining.
